Gomer’s Song

O Beloved of my heart,
How can it be that I know you so little,
Having been bound to you for so long?
You have known my beginning
And you know my end.
You have been both constant companion
And faithful friend,
Though joined to you in holy covenant,
I’ve wandered so far away.
Many lovers I took in your stead,
Yet you’ve never left me;
You’ve never stopped pursuing me.
My riches have vanished,
My body’s been stripped bare.
Shame has become my wages;
What hope have I of repair?
How can you desire
such a tired and weary soul
That’s been used, abused,
And cast aside
For a few coins of gold?
And yet I know you do.
For you have freed me
And delivered me from my enemies.

I don’t deserve you.
I am utterly undone by your love.
No more resistance.
No more defenses.
Heat rises to my cheeks
Under the weight of your gaze.
My breath shallows
As your hands cup my face,
Wiping away dirt and tears.
I surrender to your care.
You cleanse me of all these wasted years.
You clothe me in garments of dignity.
You comb and braid my hair
And replace your ring on my hand.
I may not know you now
As a woman should know her man,
But I’ll spend the rest of my days
Uncovering the mystery of you.
I don’t deserve you,
But I want to live up to
The potential you see in me,
My Love, My Life.
My One and only.
My Husband.

“And in that day, declares the L-rd, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety. And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the L-rd.” Hosea 2:16-19
